Inspired by a medieval Danish ballad about Hellelil, who fell in love with her personal guard Hildebrand, Prince of Engelland, Burton’s epic watercolour captures a clandestine encounter between two forbidden lovers in what was their final moment together. 
This will be in the National Gallery of Ireland on Merrion Square West, tickets are from €10.
A must-see for art lovers, this exhibition showcases works by a number of other artists alongside Burton including John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rosetti and Edward Burne-Jones.

The curator Donal Maguire and Rachel McIntyre introduce this illuminating look at how trauma and war have been reflected through art in some of the most evocative pieces you can currently see in Ireland. 
Aftermath: The War Landscapes of William Orpen at the National Gallery, and variations on a garden by Abbas Akhavan both depict on scenes of struggle and consequence, the former drawing on the trauma of World War I and the latter using close-to-home scenes such as the garden to evoke the confusion of war when it comes knocking at the door. 

Loving Vincent Screening

This special event will take place in The National Gallery of Ireland down by Merrion Square on the 18th of January.
Loving Vincent is the first ever fully hand-painted animated feature film. It brings to life Van Gogh’s florid painting style in an amazing and inspiring feat of visual creativity that has wowed audiences around the world.
Starring Douglas Booth and Saoirse Ronan, Loving Vincent tells the story of Van Gogh’s own life, his struggles, and eventually his death. The last letter he wrote is destined for his brother Theo but never finds him alive either, instead we are introduced to numerous characters who featured in Van Gogh’s life in an intriguing tale.
This special screening of the film, which is part of the 2018 edition of the First Fortnight Festival. This is truly an evnt not to miss out on and tickets are from €12.
