Hugh Lane Art Gallery

The Hugh Gallery is the home to a sublime modern and contemporary art collection featuring Irish and International artists in an elegant limestone-clad Georgian townhouse, just one minute walk from The Castle Hotel.  It also has dynamic temporary exhibitions often encompassing the permanent collection.

You can expect to see works by artists such as Édouard Manet (Music in the Tuileries Gardens), Claude Monet, Edgar Degas (Beach Scene), James McNeill Whistler and Edward Burne-Jones among others. Some of Hugh Lane’s original continental collection are shared between The National Gallery in London and a rotated between the two.

Irish modern artists such as  Jack B. Yeats, Nathaniel Hone, Francis Bacon, William Orphen, Harry Clarke  and John Lavery are also equally celebrated. The reconstructed studio of artist Francis Bacon found it’s home here in 1998 after it was removed from London piece by piece. It offers a fascinating insight into the life and work of the artist.

We recommend a visit into the Stained Glass Room to see ‘The Eve of St. Agnes’ by Irish artist Harry Clarke. Harry Clarke, born in 1889 is a local lad, having gone to school at Belvedere College and worked at his father’s studio, both up the street from The Castle Hotel. With themes of fairy tales an inspired by the poetry of Keats, it’s not what you’d expect of a stain glass masterpiece.

This gallery is a place for the whole family to enjoy a fantastic experience but look out for the exciting children’s and adults workshops or visit the Hugh Lane Sculpture Gallery on Sunday at noon for their weekly concerts (Sept to June).
