GPO Museum Witness History

GPO Museum Witness History, set in the iconic General Post Office building on O’Connell Street, Dublin is an award winning visitor attraction and within a seven minute of the Castle Hotel. This highly immersive and engaging exhibition puts you right inside the GPO during Easter Week in 1916.

History will come to life as you experience events from both sides of the conflict and through the eyes of bystanders caught in the crossfire through electronic touch screens, video, audio visual booths, sound and authentic artefacts – many previously unseen.

You’ll be immersed in the action as you compose newspaper reports, examine the original copy of the Proclamation and send Morse code to declare the Irish Republic by radio. Children will enjoy working the switch board and figuring out how to hold an old fashioned telephone. Self-guided tours with audio packs and headphones help appreciate and interpret the exhibition space.

Why not take a 'Rebel Rising' guided tour at 14:30 (daily) to learn more about all the people affected by the Easter Rising from civilians and postal workers to the crown forces and rebels (Guided tour for 13 year+).

Allow at least one hour to explore this powerful Dublin museum. After the exhibition, you can relax and reflect in the café and retail store overlooking the courtyard. The courtyard is also home to a commissioned sculpture called ‘They are of us all’, commemorating the forty children who died during the Easter Rising.

The GPO is not only the headquarters of the post office in Ireland, it is the birthplace of Irish communications.
