Howth - Red Rock Beach

Red Rock Beach is just one of Howth's hidden beaches. This picturesque beach is a must-visit for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy some peace, tranquillity, and a relaxing place for a swim.

Red Rock Beach is located on the southern side of the Peninsula and you will need a moderate level of fitness to reach it. The walk to the beach will take at least an hour but it is well worth the trek. The term ‘hidden’ is also accurate when describing this beach. To find it you will need to make your way towards Baily Lighthouse and keep an eye out for a small easy-to-miss dirt track to your left. Once you find it, you need to continue on the ‘Howth Cliff Walk’ on narrow paths through bushes and along the cliff's dramatic edge. Continue along the path, slowly descending as you come closer to sea level, eventually, the trail will lead you to Red Rock Beach.

This scenic walk offers stunning views of the coastline and the surrounding countryside. Along the way, you'll pass through heathland, gorse, and ferns, and if you're lucky, you might even spot some of the local wildlife, including rabbits, foxes, and birds of prey.

One of the most unique features of Red Rock Beach is the red sandstone topography from which the area gets its name.. The inlet of water almost seems man-made as it is perfectly surrounded by these large rocks on either side, ideal for sitting after your swim. The beach is small but incredibly scenic, with dramatic cliffs rising up on either side of the sand and crystal clear waters lapping at the shore.

When you're ready for a break from the sun and sand, head into the village of Howth to explore its many attractions. Howth is famous for its fishing heritage, and you'll find plenty of seafood restaurants, cafes, and pubs serving up fresh catches of the day. There's also a bustling market that takes place every weekend, where you can sample local produce and crafts.

Overall, Red Rock Beach is a charming little beach that's well worth a visit for anyone looking to escape the city and enjoy some of the natural beauty that Dublin has to offer. Whether you're looking to swim, sunbathe, fish, or explore the surrounding countryside, Red Rock Beach has something for everyone.
