Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied jails in Europe, now empty of prisoners, it is filled with history!
The jail was built in 1789 and was officially called the County of Dublin Gaol, and was originally run by the Grand Jury for County Dublin. It has held generations of criminals some as young as 5 years old, as well as historic Irish hero’s and has witnessed many tragic events as Ireland fought for its independence as a modern nation from the 1900’s. Robert Emmet spent his last few days in the jail and it is where Charles Stewart Parnell also did time.
The last prisoner was none other then the famous Irish rebel himself Eamon de Valera after his release in 1924 as Kilmainham Gaol was shut down.
It was restored in the 1960’s as one of Irelands most visited tourist attractions and is believed to be haunted by both former inmates and wardens.
It is open to the general public with a guided tour for €4.50 and has an art gallery on the top floor which exhibits paintings, sculptures and jewellery of prisoners incarcerated in prisons from all over Ireland. A visit to Kilmainham Gaol will leave you with an insight into what happened during the tough times of Ireland
