Stroll around St Stephen's Green
St Stephens Green is located on the South side of Dublin at 22 acres of land is Dublin’s largest public park. Located in a Georgian square, it was first opened to the public on 27th July 1880.
Standing at the main entrance to St Stephen’s green is the Fusilier Arch which was added in 1907, it is a tribute to all of those that fought and died in the Second Boer War. As you walk under the arch look up and you will see all the names of the people that died inscribed under the arch.
You can spend hours walking around this park admiring the Victorian layout with extensive perimeter tree and shrub planting, spectacular spring and summer Victorian bedding. The herbaceous border also provides colour from early spring to late autumn. Sanctuary from inclement weather can be obtained in the Victorian lakeside shelter or in the Victorian Swiss shelters in the centre of the park.
A large lake with ducks and other water animals can be found in Stephens Green beside the large lake you will find an ornamental gazebo. A bandstand is located in the centre of the park and bands play music during the summer months, lunchtime concerts can also be found during the summer months.
St Stephens Green remembers some of Dublin and Ireland’s important people with statues placed in important parts of the gardens. Lord Ardilaun is one of these people and he can be found seating facing the Royal College of surgeons- He was known to be the man that gave St Stephens Green to the Dublin people. As you take a relaxing walk along the winding paths look out for other statues or busts of James Joyce, Robert Emmets, a water feature called The Three Fates a gift from Germany for the help that Ireland gave to Germany after the 2nd world war.
One new feature of the square is a garden that has been designed for the visual impairs and all flowers and plants can be touch and smelt. The labels on the plants are also in braille.
After visiting St Stephens Green what about visiting St Stephens Green Shopping Centre which is just across the road or take a horse and cart ride around the city.
