Pick up a Bargain at one of Dublin's Markets
Not only does Dublin have great shops to offer but there are also markets that can be found all over the city.
Temple Bar Markets:
The food market in Temple Bar is well worth a visit, selling a variety of foods that you can sample before you buy. Stalls here are selling a range of foods from cheeses to fish & sushi, organic cereals to desserts. There are also tasty crepes to help keep hunger at bay while you browse through the rest of the market.
The book market is also worth a visit in Temple Bar, selling second-hand books along with vinyl’s which would be a great find for any collector.
The food market takes place every Saturday from 10am-4.30pm & the book market runs every Saturday & Sunday from 11am - 6pm.
Temple Bar is a 15 minute walk from The Castle Hotel. You can also catch the number 16, 13, & 123
George’s Street Arcade:
This market was the first purpose built Victorian market for Dublin & is as popular today as it was then.
A visit to this market is highly recommended as it offers a variety of goods especially in clothing. Exceptional pieces can be found here such as Indian & Bollywood clothing. Hats, scarves, & ties, Handmade Jewellery, paintings, antiques & memorabilia can also be purchased here.
The market is open every day from 9am – 6.30pm (Mon-Sat, except Thursday when it is open until 9pm) Sunday (12 noon-6.30pm)
From The Castle Hotel this market is a 20 minute walk or you can catch the number 16, 13, and 122, all from O’Connell Street which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel.
Merrion Square Market
If you are interested in art & like one off pieces this could be the market for you. It is Dublin’s only free open air art exhibition. You will get to meet the artist who will talk a bit about the paintings whether it’s a comtempary piece or a more traditional painting. The artists change so there is always something new on display.
This exhibition is open every Saturday & Sunday from 10am – 6pm
Merrion Square is located on the south side of the city & is reachable by taking the bus number 7 & 4 from O’Connell Street, which is a 5 minute walk from The Castle Hotel.
Situated on Main Street in Blackrock, Co Dublin is an indoor market selling an arrange of different items. It’s a real an Aladdin’s cave for unusual items & collectables. Porcelain, jewellery, glass, crystals & wooden products are just a few things to mention on sale in this magnificent market.
For those who love reminiscing, why not take a look in ‘Collectors Corner’ or have a look at old bank noted, medals & sports memorabilia that is also on show here.
The Market is open on Saturdays from 11am-5.30pm & Sundays & Bank Holiday Mondays 12 noon-5.30pm
The best way to get to the market is by taking the DART (train) to Blackrock & the market is only a 5 minute walk from here. The nearest DART Station to The Castle Hotel is Connolly Station which is approx. a 15 minute walk from the hotel.
Antique Quarter, Francis Street
Francis Street is becoming well known as being Dublin’s Antique & Arts Quarter. It has a reputation as being the centre of quality furniture & trader’s expertise. Not only are antiques found here but it is also home to a sewing room where you can purchase knitting essentials & get tips on how to customise clothing. There are a few great shops here where you can pick up something special or an original gift.
To get to Francis Street you can take the number 13, or 123, bus from O’Connell Street which is only a 5 minute walk from The Castle Hotel.
Moore Street, just off Henry Street
If you are looking for something that is ‘traditionally Dublin’ then look no further that Moore Street. Here you will hear the typical banter that goes on between store holders & locals. Fruit, fish & flowers are mainly sold here. There are also a few international eateries serving food from around the world. If you’re early enough you may see the deliveries coming in by horse & cart.
Moore Street is located within a 5 minute walk from The Castle Hotel, just off Henry Street
This market is a place where you can buy organic foods, pastries & cheeses. It is also a great place where you sample some food before you buy. Organic wine & bakery products would be popular goods that are purchased here.
The Co Op is open on a Thursday from 12 noon – 8pm & on Saturdays 9.30-4.30pm
On each Sunday of the month the co- op offers the following:
1st Sunday – is ‘Pure Vintage’ for everything vintage from 11am – 5pm
2nd Sunday – Fusion Sundays with stalls from around the world selling handmade goods from 11am-5pm
3rd Sunday – The Brocante Market – selling second hand furniture from 11am-5pm
4th Sunday – Dublin Flea Market – selling bric a brac, hand-made goods, records & any other unwanted items from 11am to 5pm
This market is located on Newmarket (just around the corner from St Patrick’s Cathedral), & is accessible by bus number 77a from Fleet Street & 49/a from Pearse Street which is a 10 minute walk from The Castle Hotel
Ha’Penny Flea Market
Located in Grand Social this flea market offers goods for sale from books, DVD’s, clothing, contemporary crafts, art & jewellery.
The market runs every Saturday from 12pm-6pm.
Grand Social is located opposite the Ha’ Penny Bridge on Liffey Street which is a 10 minute walk from The Castle Hotel. It is also a 2 minute walk from the Red Luas line, nearest stop is Abbey Street.
Farmleigh Farmers Market
If fresh produce is what you are looking for then this is the market for you. Selling fresh organic fruit & vegetables, hams, fresh meat, speciality cheeses, chutney & other home grown items.
In December Farmleigh hosts a Christmas market with plenty to entertain the family such as carol singing, live grotto, seasonal gifts, even mulled wine.
The market is located in the old car park which is behind the Farmleigh Gallery in Phoenix Park every Saturday & Sunday from 10am & 5pm. You can catch the luas on the Red Line to get to Phoenix Park. The stop for here is ‘Museum stop’. The nearest stop for the luas is on Abbey Street which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel.
