Jeanie Johnson Tour
Tour the Jeanie Johnson and experience life of Irish Emigrants in Famine Times.
The Jeanie Johnston is docked at Custom House Quay in Dublin’s City Centre. It is a replica of the famous Tall ship which originally sailed from Tralee in Co. Kerry to North America during the Great Famine between the years 1847 and 1855. A guided tour of the Jeanie Johnston will give visitors the opportunity to learn about the experiences of Irish emigrants as they made a daunting transatlantic passage full of hope yet desperate to escape the hardship in Ireland during the Famine years. The ship is open to the general public with guided tours running daily.
Once on board, visitors are transported back in time 150 years or more to join the devastation that the famine had brought to poverty stricken Irish emigrants. In descending to the dimly lit quarters below deck, the grim realities that faced passengers soon becomes evident. You will begin feeling the daunting experience of the millions of people who crossed the Atlantic seeking hope for a new better life in the “New World” of North America. You will experience the fear of the unknown ahead, the flight from poverty and famine, the pain of separation from family, and the challenge of a 3,000 mile voyage braving gales and harsh seas.
The Tour of the Jeanie Johnson will broaden your mind of this historic time in Ireland, and will be a memorable experience for all those who climb aboard.
