Book of Kells

The Book of Kells is an extraordinary hand-drawn manuscript of the four gospels in Latin based on a Vulgate text, written on vellum (prepared calfskin).

Dating from the year 800, with colourful illumination & elaborate scripting, you can see why it is one of the most popular places to visit in Dublin and attracts over 500,000 visitors a year.

In 2024 The Book of Kells Experience was reimagined to include new Immersive displays which guide you through the incredible history behind the manuscript.

You can now also wonder at ‘Gaia’ in the Old Library by Luke Jerram which details NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface in 3D display. The experience also features a reimaged version of The Long Room with breath-taking projections.

Castle Recommends allowing 90 minutes to take the full tour. Entry to the tour is timed so online advance booking is strongly advised. Pick up your audio guide to hear from Trinity experts throughout your self-guided visit.

The Book of Kells itself is displayed with other manuscripts at Trinity College’s Old Library. Two volumes are on public view and are changed at regular intervals.  They are displayed in a wooden bulletproof cabinet to help protect them for future generations. One is opened to display a major decorated page, and one to show two pages of script and each day the page in the book is turned over so you can observe every detail of the hand-drawn manuscript

The grand, chained library in Trinity College holds many rare works on Irish History & frequently changes the displays of rare works.
